History of Songket

Songket has a high historical value as a special Malay-style original art fabric. It is understood that the songket has been famous in Malaysia since the 15th century where the arrival of traders to Malaya has intensified the development of local weaving. Songket weaving is undertaken by those living in coastal areas and those exposed to external influences compared to the single woven yarn operated by residents living in remote areas. It has grown rapidly especially in East Coast states such as in Terengganu, Kelantan, and Pahang.

The songket weaving is done as a small industry, where the skill of the weaver takes a couple of weeks to produce a songket cloth. The songket woven industry has grown rapidly especially in the East Coast states such as in Terengganu and Kelantan. Songket can lift the dignity of the wearer and the songket woven color can symbolize a person’s position.
